The goal for this project was to
re-interpret this unique warehouse space for use as an artist’s studio,
allowing space for the creative needs of 3-4 artists whose work
required: amply-sized personal work zones, and abundance of natural
light, large, well-lit display surfaces, artist-specific media storage,
a large workshop, and a private office space as well as an accessible,
conveniently located restroom—all within the restraints of a limited
budget and deadline. The existing two-story gas station structure was
completely gutted. Immense, multi-purpose, seamless wall planes extend
around the existing interior warehouse wall perimeter, serving as an
artist’s canvas in the display of their works, while their modernist
construction and stark white color reflecting a harmony with the
preserved past. As the client says, “When I lock up at the end of the
day, I notice that I am happy! It’s then that I realize what an impact
the space has had on me. It has really changed my life.”
