The client’s objective
was to update the structure, bring in natural light, while achieving the
best use of space and increasing storage capacity. Though only 440
square feet, the owner of this small apartment asked us to design and
construction a residence that would function as both living and working
space. By removing the bearing wall to the south and replacing it with
an LVL, the kitchen provided the desired natural light, and opened the
space dramatically. More space was recouped by enlarging a hall closet
to full height allowing clothes to be stored in the bottom half, and
linens in the top. Another closet was converted into an office area that
housed a new desk and shelving area that also contained the home
entertainment system. A pocket door was installed in the bathroom,
allowing a reconfiguration of the linen closet to increase storage.
Sealing the doorway between the kitchen and the bedroom added wall space
to increase the amount of cabinets, counters and appliances in the
kitchen. The pantry was redesigned to include a new laundry area with a
vent-less washer/dryer combo. The end result is an effortless path
throughout the apartment and a feeling of less confinement and a more
open area.
