The
owners of this Arts & Crafts foursquare, originally constructed in 1923,
knew that an addition would be part of their future. They agreed that
the existing 7’ X 9’ kitchen was efficient…but not functional by today’s
standards. Working with local architect and Arts & Crafts expert Joseph
G. Metzler, a 12’ X 21’ single story addition was created to house the
new kitchen, back entry and “inglenook”.
To overcome the challenge of tucking the addition’s roof below the
existing second story windows, an interior soffit was created to allow
the new roofline to pass through the interior space. The existing
limestone foundation was matched by casting an acrylic mold from one of
the stones in order to create a veneer for the new foundation.
The new modern-functioning kitchen features detailed custom cabinetry,
Celadon Green Glaze subway tile, traditional hones soap stone counters,
pushbutton lighting controls and an old-world color palette to create a
soft, inviting atmosphere. The new kitchen space demonstrates the
melding of contemporary engineering with classic craftsmanship.
