This project was the
remodeling of a master bathroom in an executive apartment. As with all
projects in older downtown buildings, this one had its share of unique
challenges. Constructed of steel beams, steel columns, structural clay
tile arches, clay tile floors and clay tile walls, this 80 year old
building presented a formidable contest for tradesmen. The tile floors
and arches made relocating the drain almost a feat of magic, and the
owner wanted to install exhaust fans where none had existed before.
Working with a structural engineer and 80 year old plans, they
determined where they could core into the existing floor to relocate
drain lines. The drilling required water for cooling and lubrication, so
it was imperative to use a vacuum so as not to leak into the unit below.
The master bath is now light and airy, and the owners were thrilled with
the outcome.
