After the Chicago fire 130 years ago, all wooden structures south of Chicago’s northern limits had to be moved or destroyed to prevent such a catastrophe from happening again. This project involved one of the moved structures. The overriding constraint was to preserve its historical significance. Its sheer age created a lengthy list of challenges such as unsafe fireplaces, floors out of plumb, windows and doors that were unsalvageable, and mechanical elements out of date and out of code. All these things were addressed with creative solutions. The result was that the grand exterior was saved for posterity and this project has been the focus of many media articles.
