How do you add onto a 1906 neighborhood
in a protected Historic District? Very carefully. Requirements that had
to be met were that the new addition be both “compatible AND
differentiated.” The sunroom/library addition is compatible in its boxy
form, which echoes the original home, its color, and by being clearly
subservient to the two story mass behind. The addition is differentiated
by being flat roofed instead of hipped, and by juxtaposing its light and
airy structure with the mass of the old home. One third of the addition
provides much needed pantry and mudroom space, while 2/3 is a
sunroom/library, overlooking a beautifully landscaped yard.
