This renovation involved
stripping the existing bathroom down to its studs, installing a new
window and skylight, framing a new section of ceiling, refinishing all
the surfaces and installing all new fixtures. The room was designed to
seem as though it was a space with some objects in it rather than a
collection of bulky, opaque fixtures fit together in a room. To
accomplish this, each of the bathroom’s amenities was designed with an
element of transparency. The vanities were custom built to appear
furniture-like, the tub was selected to be a free-standing sculptural
element, and the bathroom floor was raised on plywood layers to allow
for a frameless, curbless shower enclosure. As a result, the wainscot
and flooring appear to pass around the objects and through the shower,
defining the true size of the room. The end result of the renovation is
a bathroom that achieves a serene, spacious feeling with a custom,
modern style. The finishes and colors enhance this effect, organizing
the space while highlighting the elements in the room.
