This home, originally
built in the late 1800’s, was destroyed by a tornado in 1946 except for
one room, prompting a new home to be built in 1947, connected to the
original structure by an outdoor porch. The challenge was to convert the
old structure, used for storage, into living area that would be
integrated into the rest of the home. The solution was to replace the
rear porch with a new sunroom to serve as a connector between the
kitchen and the original structure. The decision was made to leave the
existing brick exposed and complement it with the use of natural
limestone salvaged from the original 1800’s foundation to construct the
rear wall of the sunroom. The salvaged heart pine flooring of the
sunroom complements the old pine flooring in the original structure.
Through sensitive exposure of the natural building materials, a rich
palette of color and texture has been created that give the spaces a
comfortable character that marries a contemporary lifestyle with a sense
of history.
