The clients desired to
move their home into one of the cities most historic landmark buildings,
yet have an efficient and contemporary living space. Constructed in
1925, the Perry Snell Building is a stunning example of Mediterranean
rococo architecture. Listed on the national historic register, the
building’s conversion to loft apartments attracted them. The
architectural plans from Clemmons Architecture Inc. took almost two
years to complete. The residence ultimately became an open space with
plenty of wall area for displaying art. it is a fully integrated “smart
house” with controls for all electronics wired to the home office. Green
building principles and materials were used to promote a healthier and
more efficient home. The clients wanted a roof deck, which would allow
them to have a small garden and grill area. This required the
construction of a stucco wall and fencing to block the view of the
rooftop HVAC equipment. Since the rooftop was not structurally able to
support the additional weight of the deck and walls, structural steel
was welded to the original 1925 massive steel columns holding up the
building.
