The
clients wanted a more modern, open kitchen with a better view to their
year-round garden, but the project needed to remain inside the existing
footprint of this 240 square foot kitchen. Replacing the clunky, exposed
soffits with flush steel I-beams required some skilled construction
calisthenics, but the resulting smooth ceiling and additional height
proved well worth the effort. The kitchen immediately felt more open,
making room for basalt and glass wall cabinets, a sleek, stainless hood
fan and floating beech shelves. Coordinating perimeter cabinets in beech
with gray Silestone counters add to the kitchen’s streamlined appeal and
size while providing ample storage. Glazed lava stone tops the prep
island, which features an adjoining wood table for casual dining and
convenience. Large format tile, in earthy grayish amber porcelain, lend
a pleasing proportion and complete the warm, organic palette. Enlarging
one window, and adding a third, allows natural glimpses to the clients’
garden. Together, practical design solutions and innovative product
details combine to open up the once cramped, outdated kitchen while
offering a favorite garden view in the clients’ daily lives.
