Imagine the surprise of
the designer when she arrived for a first appointment to find this Ranch
home had two existing kitchens back-to-back. How very unusual! Upon
further investigation she also found a “powder room” without a sink. The
clients knew they wanted a new kitchen, but they did not know how to
overcome their unusual situation. To achieve a more uncomplicated
approach to the kitchen question, the new layout called for removing the
second kitchen completely and pulling the original second kitchen back
wall forward to allow just enough depth to create a walk-up bar where
the second kitchen had once resided. With the remainder of the newly
created open space a Mudroom, in close proximity to the garage entry,
was built and filled with nooks and crannies and the clients’ cats’
paraphernalia. And, maybe best of all, there was even space left to
carve in a 42” unique vanity with vessel bowl, in the, now complete,
Powder Room. In the, now complete, Powder Room, ceiling boards, original
to the home, were repurposed as wall finishes and installed in a
horizontal fashion. The new layout not only improved the homes’ traffic
flow, but it has opened up completely new functions within original
space. The clients now have one Kitchen, a Bar, a Mudroom and a complete
Powder Room all in the original footprint. The clients are ecstatic with
all their new-found spaces in their beloved family heirloom.
