2016 Award - Residential Interior under $100,000



The plan that was presented created a fresh 21st Century open plan for a good portion of the first floor of the home; a plan that perfectly fit this young professional woman that loves to entertain.

There are mixed feelings regarding the loss of a formal Dining Room, but even with removing the Dining Room wall common with the Kitchen, the designer was able to maintain the distinction of a separate, formal room with the addition of the shallow arched opening that mimics other doorways existing in the residence. Since the existing wall common with the Kitchen and Dining Room was load bearing, a header was required and slipped in just below the joists. The designer found the location of the existing Powder Room was inhibiting the open floor plan she envisioned for the new kitchen layout. After establishing the fact that the removal of the bathroom wall common with the Kitchen did not require further structural support, the design was set. The original doorway into the kitchen from the Mudroom has now become the opening to the new location for the Powder Room. Closing off the original Powder Room window was next in line. To create a new entry into the Mudroom the long pass-through into the room was shortened and treated with a granite overhang that accommodates an overflow of seated guests when entertaining. The final details were wrapped up with terrific material choices. Maple perimeter cabinets, finished with a smoky grey paint, are paired with the rich ebony finish of the Island cabinets. Glass splash tiles and the revised lighting plan through-out all the rooms complete the rebirth
