This is
the renovation of an existing converted garage. The concept was to
create an outbuilding that was both deferential to the main structure
but unique and dynamic in its own right. Craftsman style with hints of a
Japanese teahouse. Note the interplay between the structure and exterior
spaces at the dining courtyard and driveway and how the vertical lines
of the sticking, the arched doorway and the sturdy brackets all serve to
support the crisp lanes of the overhanging roof. The structure enhances
the spaces surrounding it. The client had been told by others “tear it
down!” , but together we decided against that, largely because of our
shared belief in the benefits of preservation. It took a great deal of
effort to salvage this structure, but the outcome was very satisfying
		for everyone involved.
