This project included the
conversion of part of the main floor into a bedroom suite for the
client’s teenage son who is wheelchair bound. The renovation required an
exterior ramp and entrance, an open bedroom with a large closet and a
bathroom with lavatory, toilet and shower. Accessibility for this
project had to account for the client’s son to have assistance
transferring from bed to chair, chair to toilet, and chair to shower.
Therefore ciculation space for two or more were required. ADA minimal
spatial requirements were not enough. The use of typical residential
materials and finishes kept the project from looking institutional. The
added design punch at the vanity and shower raised the quality of living
in this space.
