The goal was to create a
stately covered, yet open-air connection between a home and garage, that
would accentuate the entry to the house while providing an area for
outdoor relaxation. The primary constraint was the desire to retain an
old oak tree that stood in the center of the proposed breezeway space.
The oak tree was not only integrated into the design, but became a
distinctive feature of its overall aesthetic. The structure was also
designed to have a minimal impact on the root system of the tree. The
result is an integrated structure of garage, breezeway and house that is
richer, more distinct and visually impressive than the separate
structures of house and garage.
