2005 Special Award
Whole House
Remodel $200K - $500K
This project was inspired as part of a
local renaissance towards downtown living. The original condo was gutted
and replaced with a dynamic, yet refined design solution that optimized
functional living in a small space. In order to borrow living area from
the existing footprint, the design called for a two story “conrcrib”
with the bedroom upstairs and a lower level bathroom directly below.
This residence reinforces its minimalist approach to space planning by
concealing the mechanicals and emphasizing refined construction details.
The remodel includes a large kitchen island and wall cabinet that
defines the kitchen and cooking area. The island also serves as a
built-in for television viewing from a small sitting area. On the north
end of the corncrib, they integrated a computer desk and shelving. From
a unique steel grate mezzanine, the homeowner can access their closet
and a simple bathroom, providing easy access from the second floor
bedroom. This project reflects a simple living attitude in a highly
contemporary household-not for everyone, but certainly a polished and
expressive resolution.
