This is a whole-house
remodel of a fairly modest proportion, yet with surprisingly
sophisticated results. The owners hated the dark, cave-like entry, the
enclosed and dimly lit rooms and yearned for a space that was open and
elegant. The addition to the rear provided a large, casual family room
which opens to a trellised patio and garden beyond. Within this space is
a new kitchen and breakfast area. The new dining room is open to the
living room but maintains its separateness throughout the utilization of
columns and soffits. The most notable design features are the carefully
planned transitional spaces. The new foyer, the butler's pantry between
the dining and family rooms and the vestibule between the new powder
room and laundry room create intimate spaces which act as buffers
between the larger rooms.
