The
owners wish was to transform a small non-descript stucco box house,
built in 1943, into a charming beach cottage. The final project more
than doubled the square footage of the home to over 1,600 square feet,
created all new volumes and spaces, and integrated the exterior patio
and rooftop deck garden with the interior space. The remodeled space now
features the kitchen, dining, guest bath and family living area
downstairs. The upper level is comprised of the master suite, study,
sewing area and guest bedroom with a large bath accessible to all. A
bridge leads out from the upper level across the top of the lower patio
to a rooftop garden where the owner maintains their vegetable garden.
Addressing the need for "ageing in place", an elevator was installed and
is cleverly designed to appear as a pantry door downstairs and a closet
door upstairs. Now, with no concerns about their future ability to
access the second level, the owners are enjoying all levels of their
newly renovated beach cottage.
